‘Sense of smell?’ he says. ‘I never gave it a thought. You don’t normally give it a thought. But when I lost it — it was like being struck blind. Life lost a good deal of its savor — one doesn’t realize how much ‘savor’ is smell. You smell people, you smell books, you smell the city, you smell the spring — maybe not consciously, but as a rich unconscious background to everything else. My whole world was suddenly radically poorer … (“The man who mistook his wife for an hat” Oliver Sacks) Although they share a thousand-year-old coexistence, men and dogs orient their interests in the world in a substantially different way. We as humans are sight-oriented animals this means that sight is our dominant sense. Dogs are, above all, smelling oriented animal. Sense of smell is the dominant one, followed by hearing and then sight. This is a self-learn course aimed to cover the main topics related to the dog’s sense of smell. The first problem that is faced by anyone who decides to train a dog to search for people or detection is the difficulty in defining what they are working on. In recent years science has focused on many areas that may be useful to those who work with the dog’s nose. Today we have more knowledge about the physiology of smell, scent perception, theory of learning, and how odours behaves. ABC of Clicker Training

Learn the basics of clicker training to start communicating with your dog and teach new behaviors.

When my journey in dog training began, I wondered why people use coercion. Was coercion the only choice? Was this the only way to interact with animals? But after a while everything changed: I met the world of clicker training.My life changed when I discovered that I could communicate with my dog just by using a little sound: click! So instead of forcing the dog to sit, you can have a dog who wants to sit. There’s a big difference! Sometimes we feel frustrated because our dogs don’t listen to us, or they ignore us. How many times does this happen? But, have you ever thought that this can be due to a lack of understanding between two different species? The beauty of the clicker is that it helps to build a strong and effective communication. How can I talk to my dog if I speak English and he speaks “dog language”? By using the clicker we can explain to our learners what we want to say. The clicker is like a bridge between the behavior and the reinforcement. Simply said, it tells the dog what is the behavior that earns the treat. And this leads to the repetition of that behavior. Moreover, the dog understands that he is in control of the situation: once he figures out what is the behavior we reinforce, he can make us click! And this is how confidence grows. And the more you build confidence, the easier it is for the dog to cooperate with you.Another amazing aspect of using a clicker to learn a behavior is that you can only focus on what is “positive” and not on what is “negative”: you click a behavior you like but you can’t click what you don’t want. In other words, you explain to the dog that you like what he does, but you don’t focus on behaviors you don’t like. Instead of punishing unwanted behaviors, we teach the dog more appropriate behaviors. Furthermore, remember that learning new behaviors stimulates our cognitive skills (attention, memory, problem solving, etc) and it is not different for our furry friends. You’ll see that the more your dog learns, the more he will be able to learn. Last but not least, using a clicker makes you a better trainer. You realize how big is the difference between forcing your dog to do something or explaining what you want, giving the dog the correct information, respecting his needs, building trust. And all this is an invaluable experience for you. Isn’t it a fascinating world? Once you learn how to use it, you never stop. BUT. Keep in mind that before teaching behaviors to our learner, we have to consider ourselves learners too. This is what this course is about: we’ll start from the beginning because I want you to acquire the skills you’ll need for the rest of your life. Also, I want you to pay attention to the process and not run to the final behavior, because it is the process that leads to the final behavior. This is the key for successful training. During the course we’ll try to understand how to use the clicker and the science behind it through some very basic exercises. While working on these, we’ll focus on the mechanics of clicker training, delivery patterns, errorless learning, cues, latency. Basically, we’ll “use” these behaviors to understand how to use a clicker and all the components that stand behind the final result. This class is for anyone that has ever felt overwhelmed trying to teach something using positive reinforcement. You know you want your learner to do X Y Z, but have no idea where to start, or how to stay on track once you do get started. You aspire to this mythical thing called “errorless learning,” only to end up disheartened and demotivated when training sessions don’t go as planned. “Be a splitter, not a lumper.” Maintain a high rate of reinforcement.” “Only say a cue once.” There are so many rules and opinions about what good training is. It can sometimes be paralyzing. In Brave Learning 101, we are going to have fun unpacking a few of these “rules.” Is it possible to achieve meaningful and effective communication with our learners without throwing all the babies out with the bathwater? In place of rigid, recipe-driven training, we are going to explore a more progressive approach where the primary principle at play is performance–feedback—revision. Premium teams will be encouraged to pick one or two simple behaviors to explore for the full six weeks. With “learning to learn” as the primary goal, it doesn’t really matter what the actual behavior is, or even how far along people get. I will help each person plan and reflect back on sessions, following a simple planning rubric. All participants will need to do is be brave, take the leap, and allow their learners to lead the way from there. Prerequisites: a willingness to be brave and share your learning with others. Are you looking for something incredibly cool and skilful to add to the breadth of training you already do with your animals? Or do you fancy the joy of figuring out the puzzle of communicating an abstract concept to your non-verbal learner and give them the tools to show you how they see the world? Or do you care for an animal who currently has limited mobility due to age or injury and you’re wondering how you can still keep them mentally engaged? Or do you perhaps have an animal who finds the world sometimes overwhelming and you’re looking for predictable and well-rehearsed games you can play with the fingers on your hands to immediately give them a known world to enter and work within? If any of the above resonated with you, then concept training might just be the right thing for you. This course builds upon Foundations to Concept Training. The goal of the course is to enable you to teach the concept of size discrimination to your animal training partner to enable them to tell apart bigger from smaller and full from empty. We will systematically generalise the skill so that they can apply this concept to any set of objects or patterns in the future. We will cover: what is concept training what makes something a concept the pros and cons of different setups and indications* the handler as a cue cue transfer protocol teaching opposite concepts in pairs ranking relevance of prompts ading out prompts systematic introduction of novel objects Premium students have the benefit of instructor coaching with an animal of their choice. The course will likely be easiest with dogs but please do get in touch with me to work with another species. *This course will only cover teaching a concept. It will not cover the foundation behaviours that are mandatory before we can teach a concept. These foundation behaviours are stationing, offering engagement to the handler and an indication of your choice under stimulus control working with a prompt on at least two objects. Therefore Premium students are required to send me a video before they register for this course to demonstrate a few repetitions of two-choice discrimination following your prompt with the animal indicating using any consistent behaviour of your choice. See prerequisite demo video below for some examples of what that might look like. Although it is not mandatory to take the Foundations to Concept Training course if the prerequisites can otherwise be demonstrated, those who would like to learn the prerequisites are recommended to take the foundations course first.

If your dog struggles with reactivity or shyness, or is fearful of people, objects and new environments this course is for you!

What does a confident canine look like? Close your eyes and try and imagine a dog that is bold, confident, sure of himself. Secure in his own paws, knowing that the world is a great place to be a dog: friendly people everywhere, lots of places to sniff and dig and roll around and a bunch of good friends to spend his time with. The Canine Confidence course will expand on these subjects and we will dig deeper into all these subjects: Building trust and make your shy dog training savvy, by giving him a choice in the matter, and ways to say yes and no to training, being able to ask how to take a break and getting him to love training in the process. Exploring different reinforcers – both treats and toys that you can keep in your pocket and those that are already in the environment. Using shaping, scent work, problem solving skills, balance games and body awareness to boost confidence. Building enrichment into your dogs daily routine, giving him an outlet to be a dog without the influence of the human. A dog that is lacking confidence can: – have a hard time in everyday life with fear of noises, new things, people, dogs etcetera – have a hard time solving problems on his own – show aggressive tendensies towards people or dogs – get performance anxiety in sports – can look like he lacks motivation for training when he is really just worried to make a misstake – be difficult to leave with a dog sitter and also difficult to bring to new places – can get stress related health issues So what are the benefits of training these things? A confident dog will often have an easier time with everyday challenges such as meeting new things, people and be braver when meeting new environments. He might also perform better in competitions and formal training sessions since he is less worried about sounds, movement etcetera and has the confidence to run fast, try new things and thoroughly enjoy himself.
